Rienzi Museum of Fine Arts

Rienzi Museum of Fine Arts

The Rienzi Museum of Fine Arts Houston offers a rare opportunity to visit the home of a prominent art collector. A renowned Houston collector, Harris Masterson III, generously donated his home to the museum in order to make it accessible to the public. The collection includes over two thousand volumes, examples of fine bindings, and early publications by renowned writers. The museum’s exhibition explores the treasures of the Rienzi Library, which reflects the refined lifestyle of the Houstonians. It is located at 1406 Kirby Dr, Houston, TX 77019. See More
Members can become members of the Rienzi Society and benefit from special invitations to lectures and events, as well as the opportunity to actively participate in choosing pieces for the Museum’s collection. Members are also invited to attend the annual Rienzi Society dinner, a fundraising event that allows members to preview items available for purchase and includes a formal dinner in the Museum’s ballroom. The Society also organizes a biannual exhibition for patrons to view the Rienzi Collection and explore the Museum’s collection.
The MFAH was established in 1900 and comprises several buildings, including the Audrey Jones Beck Building, Caroline Wiess Law Building, Glassell School of Art, and the Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden. The Beck and Law buildings are connected by the Wilson Tunnel, which features the iconic installation The Light Inside by James Turrell. In addition to the exhibition spaces, the MFAH houses a repertory cinema and two significant libraries.
The Rienzi Museum of Fine Arts Houston’s collections have been donated by prominent Houston families and foundations. The first important oil paintings donated to the museum were by George M. Dickson. A few years later, Annette Finnigan began to donate antiquities to the museum. Then, in the 1930s, Ima Hogg donated a collection of avant-garde European prints and Frederic Remington’s paintings. In 1944, Edith and Percy Straus bequeathed eighty works. Explore More
