Artist Larry Garmezy spent 32 years working for Shell Oil as a geologist. He graduated from Penn State University and Amherst College. His works have been shown in numerous juried exhibitions and are located in private collections throughout the U.S. and in offices and homes in Europe. The 10th Annual Juried Exhibition at Archway Gallery Houston was the perfect way to showcase some of the local artists who may otherwise go unnoticed. Among the winners of the exhibit, Trojan Goat by Betsy Evans won first place. There were 295 pieces selected, and Diane Gregory, the gallery’s curator, selected 62 of them. She evaluates the meaning of each piece, the artist’s craft, and the way the image fits into the rest of the exhibit.
Emily Wang studied art at the Rhode Island School of Design. She painted a winning piece on her visit to her boyfriend’s parents’ home in Sugar Land. Inspired by a mixture of emotions, her piece depicts insecurity, faith, and optimism. With her winning piece, she hopes to settle down in Houston and establish a career in the art world. In addition to receiving a $500 cash prize, she is also getting guest privileges at the gallery for the next month.
